Institut Biologi Sistem
Systems biology is a multidisciplinary field with focus on holistic understanding of the complex molecular interactions within living organisms. This course serves as an introduction to the research methods and approaches taken in the field of systems biology and to integrate this approach in students’ research projects. This includes studies in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and bioinformatics. Recent development in the research technique and technology, as well as different aspects on the experimental design to investigate the molecular interactions within cell, organ and organism will be introduced using examples of studies in microbes and plants. Focus of the course will be on the application of research methodology in the field of systems biology disseminated through lectures, journal club and seminar. This is a student-centred learning course. The evaluation will be based on students’ performance during discussion sessions, presentations and written summary reports of selected journal articles throughout the course.

This course aims to provide the background and principals of conducting a scientific research. Research ethics will discuss the principle of research as well as researchers’ roles in various aspects of research. The research management topic will include information searching using manual and online tools, experimental design, research proposal preparation, technical presentation of the results both orally and in writing with reference to the UKM Thesis Writing Guideline as well as an introduction to the research activities at Institute of Systems Biology (INBIOSIS). Regulatory and legal aspects will be discussed under the Intellectual Properties (IP) and the safety of workspace topics. The lectures and discussion sessions are designed to cater specific topic such as big data analysis on biological data. Course assessment will be based on the research proposal evaluation and the proposal presentation in a specific seminar.
